One of the key techniques taught by the Hollywood Camera Work DVDs is to get out of the "sequential"ť storyboard approach, where each thing that happens is seen as separate shots glued back to back, and instead get into a "parallel" blocking mind-set, where you work on multiple cameras at the same time, which creates a very different, and much more fluid, kind of blocking.
Per Holmes explains that storyboarding comes with a number of significant limitations that prevent maybe 90% of the techniques available to you as a director. He instead suggests to use the "parallel"ť approach, already heavily used by traditional filmmakers, because it creates much more organic blocking. Also, because shots are written down as scene-diagrams, it allows you to use the other 90% of techniques that are otherwise impossible to storyboard. |
